JOhnson's Goals For the Vietnam War
Initially, President Johnson's goal for the Vietnam War was for U.S. troops to secure South Vietnam's defenses until South Vietnam could take over, not for the U.S. to win the war. By entering Vietnam without a goal to win, Johnson set the stage for pubic and toop disappointment when the U.S. found themselves in a stalemate with the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong.
Nixon's Goals for the Vietnam War
In 1969, Richard Nixon became president, and he had his own plan to bring U.S. involvement in Vietnam to an end. Nixon outlined his plan called Vietnamization, which was going to remove U.S. troops from Vietnam while handing back fighting to Southern Vietnamese troops.
